Ngāti Pāoa Iwi Trust

The Ngāti Pāoa Iwi Trust is the post settlement governance entity (PSGE) mandated to represent Ngāti Pāoa.  Formed through a deed of trust in October 2013, the Ngāti Pāoa Iwi Trust is referred to in Treaty settlement deeds and legislation.

The purpose of the Ngāti Pāoa Iwi Trust is to receive, manage, hold and administer the Trust’s assets on behalf of, and for the benefit of the present and future members of Ngāti Pāoa.  This includes promoting the educational, spiritual, economic, social and cultural advancement and well-being of Ngāti Pāoa and its members.

The Ngāti Pāoa Iwi Trust also represents Ngāti Paoa on Local Government Act and Resource Management Act matters.

The Ngāti Pāoa Iwi Trust is governed by a board of seven trustees, who are elected every three years by postal ballot of registered adult members of the iwi.  The trustees appoint a chair and deputy chair from among themselves.

Subsidiaries

Ngāti Pāoa Iwi Trust has created subsidiaries to undertake commercial operations and to hold whenua that is culturally significant to Ngāti Pāoa. For financial reporting purposes the Ngāti Pāoa Iwi Trust, plus its subsidiaries (including other commercial entities Ngāti Pāoa holds shares in), are known as the ‘Ngāti Pāoa Group’.

Ngāti Pāoa Group Investments Limited (NPGIL) is the commercial arm of the Ngāti Pāoa Iwi Trust. It is 100% owned by the Iwi Trust and exists to undertake commercial development on behalf of the iwi. NPGIL currently has a board of three directors, appointed by the Iwi Trust.

NPGIL holds the Ngāti Pāoa shareholding in Pouarua Farm and the Marutūāhu Rōpū Limited Partnership. When all aspects of the Treaty settlement are completed, it will also hold Ngāti Pāoa shareholding in collective entities created through the Pare Hauraki Collective Redress Deed, and likely other arrangements.

Te Whenua Taurikura o Ngāti Pāoa Custodian Trustee Limited is a custodian trustee company, established to hold title to lands that the Ngāti Pāoa Iwi Trust manages and does not wish to transact commercially, and which have specific cultural and spiritual value to Ngāti Pāoa. Under the constitution of the company the directors must implement decision-making by the Ngāti Pāoa Iwi Trust.
